Escalator Replacement/Modernization

 

Very few if any consulting firms are advertising their ability or willingness to provide escalator consulting services related to the replacement or modernization of escalator equipment.  For some they generally lump this service in with their main focus of elevator modernization which the two could not be more different.  Replacement of any escalator equipment in any building is a very public procedure that does not hide in a hoistway and must be dealt with in a much different method from a Project Management standpoint.  Although it seems relatively straight forward to replace a set of escalators, the unforeseen conditions, timeframe and surrounding related work varies with every installation we have ever participated in.

 

Our first step with these Projects is to perform a detailed feasibility study outlining what related work will need to take place, proposed barricade layouts, building upgrades that may be required to conform to current code and formulation of a detailed schedule associated with the entire Project.  Part of our due diligence is to identify the three methods of replacement, direct replacement or a complete or partial modernization.  Based upon type of equipment, building layout, the clients ability to deal with a certain level of disruption all are deciding factors for our recommendation.

 

After our recommendation is made we prepare complete bid packages for both the escalator work and the related building work, put them out to bid, and assist the client with the negotiation process.  Once this is complete we see the Project to completion and perform a thorough commissioning inspection of both the escalator work and the related work.
